Gouge Mart
Gouge mart is an immersive and thought-provoking installation that explores the profound impacts of the cost-of-living crisis on individuals in the community. Through its walk-in experience, the design aims to simulate introspection and dialogue about the economic challenges faced by students on campus. Located in the tabled courtyard at Griffith QCA, the installation will create a surreal livelihood attracting students passing on their way to S02.
Sustainability is the way of the future
With new structures rising in the Southbank area, significant waste is being created from left over materials. We have chosen to repurpose the materials by implementing them into the design, reducing the embodied energy. The physical form pays homage to the frozen food section at the supermarket. Structured to look like a human sized freezer, the outer wall has repeating clear panels made from old wrapping plastic and timber. When students enter, they are presented with wall of recycled magazines and newspapers articles about the crisis. Creating a contrast; timber shelfing is attached, that will contain fake food with extreme prices made from recycled plastic and paper. In collaboration with the SRC, we will have clear instructions on how to get to the SRC, where free pantry boxes will be given out.
Gouge mart is designed to educate and engage students, whilst inspiring a sense of empathy and activism. It acts as a catalyst for continuing discussions about inequality, economic justice, and the pressing need for systemic change.
